Old Belle Isle Zoo demolition underway

Demolition is underway for the old abandoned Belle Isle Zoo. The old zoo structures are being taken down, and officials are also removing invasive plants.  The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said ecologists are ensuring the protection of mature trees, where some are over a century-old, and sensitive wildlife such as foxes, snakes and bats. The project began in early November and is expected to wrap up by the end of the year.
