Detroit Archdiocese launches transformation plan -- What to know

Earlier this year, the church revealed the global Catholic population is growing -- up more than 1.4 billion Catholics. While it's growing in some areas, the Catholic faith is declining in others, including Michigan and the Metro Detroit area. As a result, the Archdiocese of Detroit announced this past Sunday that it will undergo a major restructuring because the number of Catholics in Metro Detroit is declining. According to the Archdiocese's website, mass attendance is down, and at least two-thirds of parishes have fewer than 600 weekly mass attendees. There are fewer priests, and there has been a dramatic decline in baptisms, first communions, and confirmations, along with a steady drop in Catholic marriages. Father Mario Amore, with the Archdiocese of Detroit, and the person who helped lead the restructuring efforts, joined Local 4 Live to help navigate the Catholic faithful here in Metro Detroit.
