Residents, lawmakers urge state to shut down US Ecology Detroit South amid odor complaints

Residents and lawmakers are calling for the closure of the US Ecology Detroit South facility due to persistent noxious odors and environmental concerns, as it seeks permit renewal from state regulators. The Detroit Hamtramck Coalition for Advancing Healthy Environments, supported by State Representative Tonya Myers-Phillips and Wayne County Commissioners, is leading the opposition, emphasizing the community's right to clean air. Despite Republic Services' claims of facility upgrades and improved odor management, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy is reviewing the renewal application, balancing community demands against the company's enhancements.
