Detroit’s budget surplus driven by strategic spending, not revenue growth, officials say
Detroit announced a $105 million budget surplus for the 2024-25 fiscal year, surpassing the projected $60 million, due to strategic departmental spending, as highlighted by outgoing Mayor Mike Duggan and CFO Tanya Stoudemire. Mayor-elect Mary Sheffield plans to use the surplus to maintain financial stability, strengthen neighborhoods, and support long-term growth, while City Council member Fred Durhal will join her administration to help secure additional resources from Lansing.
