Detroit sees lowest murder rate since 1965 amid decline in crime
Detroit reported its lowest murder rate since 1965, with a significant drop in violent crime across all major categories in 2025. The city recorded 165 murders, representing an 18.7% decrease from 2024 and a 34.5% decrease from 2023. Nonfatal shootings and carjackings also saw substantial reductions, with city officials crediting effective strategies and partnerships with various law enforcement agencies and community groups. Mayor Mary Sheffield announced the creation of the Office of Neighborhood and Community Safety, focusing on preventative public safety measures and community services.
