Detroit sees lowest murder rate since 1965 amid decline in crime

Detroit experienced a historic drop in violent crime in 2025, with the lowest murder rate since 1965 and significant reductions across all major crime categories. Under Mayor Mary Sheffield's leadership, initiatives involving partnerships with law enforcement and community groups have been credited for these improvements. The city plans to further enhance public safety by launching the Office of Neighborhood and Community Safety, focusing on preventative measures and community support services.
