‘We need to know where to go’: Detroit families spotlight need for citywide poverty reform

Detroit's new mayor, Mary Sheffield, is prioritizing poverty reform, particularly in response to families living in cars due to housing insecurity. She announced the appointment of Dr. Luke Schaefer as the Chief Executive of Health, Human, and Poverty Solutions, who will oversee the restructuring of services like the Detroit Health Department and a new Department of Human, Homeless, and Family Services. Schaefer aims to streamline services and improve coordination to help residents access support more easily. The restructuring plan, supported by several city council members, is intended to empower families and improve the quality of life for Detroit's vulnerable populations.
