Aging water infrastructure, cold weather cause surge in Detroit water main breaks

Detroit is facing severe challenges with its aging water infrastructure as crews work to repair over 50 water main breaks amidst freezing weather. The city's water system, averaging 95 years old, is highly susceptible to damage in extreme cold conditions. Despite ongoing efforts, including a $100 million annual capital improvement program, only a small portion of the 2,700 miles of water mains has been repaired or replaced since 2018. City officials urge residents to remain patient as repair crews strive to address the widespread issues.
