Wayne County prosecutor declines charges in deaths of siblings in Greektown van

In February 2025, two siblings, 2-year-old Amillah and 9-year-old Darnell, tragically died from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning in a van where their family lived in Detroit's Greektown Casino parking garage. The incident, which highlighted deficiencies in Detroit's homelessness response, led to the launch of a seven-point improvement plan by then-Mayor Mike Duggan. Despite the family reaching out for help months earlier, assistance was not provided. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced no criminal charges will be filed but emphasized concern for the remaining children and the need for ongoing support for vulnerable families.
