Leland House residents fight for belongings as Detroit building faces potential auction

Residents of the historic Leland House in Downtown Detroit face uncertainty as they remain unable to retrieve their belongings following an emergency evacuation in December due to an electrical failure. The Detroit Fire Marshal has denied entry citing safety risks, while residents, scattered across temporary accommodations, express frustration over the lack of due process and communication from the property owner, Leland House Limited Partnership, which is pushing for a potential auction in March amidst more than $20 million in debt. Residents’ attorneys are actively filing motions to block the auction and seek permission for tenants to personally remove their belongings.
