Belle Isle undergoing a rebrand -- What to know

Belle Isle Park is turning the page and undergoing a new brand and identity. The goal is to reintroduce Belle Isle as more than just a park, but a living cultural landmark and “Detroit’s backyard.” The French settled on the island in the 1700s. The city of Detroit bought Belle Isle in 1879 to create a park to rival New York’s Central Park. It was designed by the same man who designed Central Park, Frederick Law Olmsted, and opened in 1880. The city ran the park until 2014, when the state took over operations to help improve maintenance and preservation. Now, the 982-acre island is undergoing a fresh, new update that includes a rebranded website to make it easier to plan visits and interact with the Belle Isle Conservancy, the nonprofit that supports the island’s operations.  The President and CEO of the Belle Isle Conservancy, Meagan Elliot, joined Local 4 Live to talk about the rebrand.
