Mayor Sheffield budget calls for property tax cut, homelessness funding
Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield has unveiled her budget proposal for fiscal year 2027, focusing on property tax reductions, wage increases for city workers, and investments to combat homelessness. The budget, totaling just over three billion dollars with 1.5 billion allocated to the general fund, is slightly smaller than the current one due to reduced spending on special projects. Despite the decrease, funding for essential services like police, fire, and trash collection remains consistent. Sheffield emphasizes fiscal discipline and plans to introduce new revenue streams, while an executive order ensures a living wage for all full-time city employees.
