National Volunteer Week: The value of giving your time in Michigan

This week is National Volunteer Week -- a time to celebrate the people who show up for their communities and encourage more to join them. And the numbers show people are answering the call. According to a Gallup poll, 63% of Americans volunteered their time to a charitable organization in the past year, and 76% gave money to a cause. There is a shift happening, too. Volunteering for non-religious organizations hit a majority for the first time ever, at 55 percent, as more Americans devote time and money to causes they care about. In Michigan, that time has real value. According to Independent Sector, a volunteer hour in Michigan in 2024 was worth $32.87 -- up 4% from the year before. One Metro Detroit nonprofit helping people find the right place to give their time is Share Detroit, and their executive director, Karly Moore, joins us this morning.
