Suspect in Oakland County carjacking shooting was on probation for prior violent crime
Mauriel Dashawn Hearn, a 25-year-old Ann Arbor man on probation for a prior violent crime in Washtenaw County, was denied bond after being charged with carjacking, assault with intent to murder, and other offenses for allegedly shooting a woman in front of her 11-year-old son and stealing her car at an Orion Township shopping plaza. Authorities say Hearn fled the scene, crashed the stolen car, and was apprehended after running into nearby woods. The case has sparked debate over sentencing practices, with Oakland County officials criticizing Washtenaw County’s handling of Hearn’s previous case, while Washtenaw prosecutors maintain his probation was consistent with state guidelines. Hearn’s attorney plans to seek a change of venue, citing concerns about pretrial publicity impacting a fair trial.
