A baby sturgeon named Washago toured Detroit schools. Now it's going home
A lake sturgeon named Washago has been visiting classrooms across metro Detroit as part of an educational program teaching students about water quality, conservation, and Michigan’s native species. The sturgeon, a threatened species and the largest native freshwater fish in the Great Lakes, will soon be released into the wild during a public event called Sturgeon Fest, alongside other fish raised by students. The program, organized by the Huron-Clinton Metroparks and related organizations, aims to connect children and families to nature and foster environmental stewardship through hands-on experiences and interpretive programs.
