Heat wave warning: Common medications that can increase your risk of heat illness

Certain common medications—including diuretics, blood pressure and heart drugs, mental health medications, stimulants, and some over-the-counter allergy and sleep aids—can increase the risk of dehydration, heat illness, and overheating during heat waves by interfering with the body's ability to cool itself or maintain fluid balance. People with diabetes face additional risks due to the effects of heat on blood sugar control and medication or device stability. Warning signs of heat stress include dizziness, fatigue, and reduced urination, while severe symptoms require emergency attention. Individuals should not stop their medications without medical advice and should consult their healthcare provider for heat safety guidance.
