Election panel analyzes what Michigan's Democratic Senate primary could signal for party's future

As Michigan voters decide the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate, political observers are watching whether the results reflect growing support for the party's progressive wing or reaffirm a more traditional Democratic message ahead of November's general election. With returns continuing to come in Tuesday night, Flashpoint host Jason Colthorp convened a bipartisan panel to discuss the closely watched primary between Democratic candidates Abdul El-Sayed and U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens. The panel included Republican strategist Jason Roe of Roe Strategic, Portia Roberson, vice chair of the Michigan Democratic Party, Republican communications strategist Andrea Bitely of Bitely Communications and Stephen Henderson of BridgeDetroit. Panelists examined what early vote totals could reveal about Democratic voters' priorities and whether the outcome reflects the strength of progressive policies, the appeal of more moderate candidates or other factors such as campaign organization, fundraising and turnout.
