Metro Detroit Youth Day is back

Starting Tuesday, Metro Detroit is all about the kids. Metro Detroit Youth Day is back, and this year it is bigger than ever. We are not talking about one day anymore. This is five days, six locations all across Detroit, and every bit of it free. So how did this all begin? We have to go back 41 years to a man named Edward Deeb. He had a simple but powerful idea -- What if Detroit stopped everything and threw the biggest celebration in the city just for its kids? He made it happen, and it never stopped. Over four decades, more than two and a half million kids have been part of Metro Detroit Youth Day. More than 2,300 college scholarships have been handed out, and generations of Detroit kids have grown up with this event as part of their story. Now, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Detroit are bringing it back in a big way. Five days, six locations, all across the city -- all free. We are talking Belle Isle, Eastern Market, the Joe Louis Greenway, Michigan Central, Ralph C. Wilson Park, and more. And everything is there for the kids: sports, wellness, music, technology, arts, and leadership. Addison Mauck, the program manager with the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, one of the key partners making this week happen, joined Local 4 Live.
