National Association of Women in Construction helps women build careers in skilled trades

The National Association of Women in Construction is working to expand opportunities for women in the skilled trades and help students pursue construction careers through scholarships and educational support. The organization was founded in 1953 by 16 women working in construction administration, at a time when many were referred to as “girl Fridays.”  More than seven decades later, the national organization and its chapters continue to advocate for women in an industry historically dominated by men. For the 2025-26 school year, NAWIC has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for scholarships supporting students in apprenticeships and construction-related education.  The scholarships are available to women and men pursuing careers and training in the construction industry. In a recent Trade Up interview, Kathi Dobson and LaJuan Counts of NAWIC discussed the organization’s mission and efforts to expand opportunities in construction.
