Metro Detroit weather: Clear skies and warming, when to catch “shooting star” tonight

DETROIT – The rain we woke up to this morning moved out right on schedule, and abundant sunshine graced our skies this afternoon. Yes, it was breezy with 25 to 30-mph gusts (also right on schedule), but those breezes didn’t feel all that bad with temperatures that soared into the (16 to 17 degrees Celsius).

Skies will remain mostly clear through the night, which is good news since the Lyrid Meteor shower peaks tonight. The earth will cross the debris path left behind by Comet Thatcher, so we may see a few “shooting stars” tonight. You’ll want to look to the northeast after 11 p.m., good luck, and let me know on Twitter (@PGLocal4) if you see any.

Friday

Lows by Friday morning will be in the low 40s (5 degrees Celsius), with west winds shifting to the north and diminishing to 2 to 5 mph.

This evening’s sunset is at 8:22 p.m., and Friday morning’s sunrise is at 6:42 a.m.

We’ll start our Finally Friday with some sunshine, but clouds will increase, and there’s an increased chance for some rain, especially the farther south and southwest you are as the afternoon progresses. Highs will be cooler than Thursday, generally in the mid-to-upper-50s (14 degrees Celsius). East wind at 8 to 13 mph will keep you cooler on the east side near the big lakes.

Rain and possibly even some thunderstorms will increase overnight Friday night ahead of an approaching warm front. It appears that we’ll get between one-half and three-quarters of an inch of total rain—lows near 50 degrees (10 degrees Celsius).

Weekend forecast

When we wake up Saturday morning, any lingering showers in the area should end, with skies becoming mostly sunny. It’ll be a breezy, warm day in that air mass behind the warm front, with highs soaring into the mid-to-upper 70s (24 to 26 degrees Celsius). As I explained yesterday, those of you on the eastside getting wind off of the chilly lakes will be colder.

Mostly clear Saturday night, with lows in the low 60s (16 degrees Celsius); that’s our average high this time of year!

Mostly sunny, breezy, and warm on Sunday before a few showers break out by late afternoon. Keep an eye on our app’s real-time radar if you plan on doing some Sunday afternoon or evening grilling. Highs should approach 80 degrees (27 degrees Celsius), especially in the south.

A cold front coming through late Sunday night will then cool us back down for most of next week. Tuesday and Wednesday will be the coldest days, with highs across the northern half of the area not even making it to 50 degrees (10 degrees Celsius).
