Near-record warmth Monday, followed by rain in Metro Detroit

Temperatures to tumble to near normal by end of week

Metro Detroit will have near-record warmth on Monday, March 4, 2024 with highs around 70 degrees. Then, rain showers and thunderstorms will move across Lower Michigan on Monday night and Tuesday morning. (WDIV)

We will have May-like temperatures to start the workweek in Metro Detroit, but the weather will return to normal by the end of the week.

As a warm front ushers in the warm air, Metro Detroit will have an unseasonably mild night with lows in the mid 40s from Sunday night into early Monday morning. Clouds will increase overnight and Monday will start off with mostly cloudy skies.

Monday

With decreasing clouds, it will be partly cloudy by Monday afternoon. A warm air mass will push temperatures into record territory ahead of an approaching cold front. Highs will be around 70 degrees. The record high for March 4 is 69 degrees (1983). Southerly winds will be 5 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.

Clouds will increase again on Monday night. There will be the chance of a few isolated showers late, but the better chance for rain will be during the overnight hours after midnight. Temperatures will only fall to the lower 50s.

Tuesday

Expect rain showers Tuesday morning with the possibility of a thunderstorm. Scattered rain showers will linger into the afternoon, and an isolated shower will be possible in the evening. Otherwise, it will be mostly cloudy. Highs will be in the lower 60s and lows will dip back into the upper 30s in most locations. Lows will be around 40 degrees in Detroit.

What’s normal?

Temperatures will tumble through the week until highs are near normal by the weekend. The normal highs this week are 41 to 43 degrees, and the normal lows are 25 to 26 degrees.

More snow?

After rain showers at the start of the week, the next best chance of precipitation will arrive Friday. The system will bring the chance of rain and wind through Sunday, including the chance of a few wet snowflakes on Sunday.

Daylight Saving Time

Besides the milder weather, another sign of spring is the start of Daylight Saving Time. We will “spring forward” one hour next Sunday, March 10, from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m.
