DETROIT – Metro Detroit is expected to get its first taste of winter, with snow on track to arrive over the weekend.

Timeline

The first precipitation of the weekend is likely to move in as rain late Saturday night, but with high temperatures only in the 30s on Sunday and Monday, that rain is expected to transition to snow on Sunday morning.

Lows will be in the low 20s each morning early next week, so scattered lake-effect snow showers are also likely Monday.

So here is the timeline:

  • Friday by daybreak: Widespread light rain.
  • Saturday night: More rain moves in.
  • Sunday morning: Rain transitions to snow.
  • Monday: Scattered lake-effect snow showers.

How much snow will we get?

It looks likely that we’re going to get measurable snow, which is considered at least a tenth of an inch.

It’s possible that some areas of Southeast Michigan will get enough snow to shovel, but that’s not expected to be widespread.

The ground isn’t frozen yet, so we’ll see a lot of melting for the snow that does fall, and that’ll affect accumulation.

We’ll have a better grasp of the possible weekend snowfall totals on Friday.

Plummeting temperatures

As mentioned above, temperatures are going to plummet this weekend, with wind chills falling between 10-20 degrees by Monday morning.

So whether or not it snows, it’s going to feel like winter.
