Will Metro Detroit schools be closed on Friday? How dangerous cold could affect decision

Wind chill temperatures likely 20-25 degrees below 0 on Friday morning

DETROIT – Will Metro Detroit schools be closed again on Friday? The dangerously cold temperatures could certainly cause some closures.

Our stretch frigid wind chills continues into the end of this week. Temperatures and snowfall have already caused hundreds of closures over the past several days.

Wind chill readings on Thursday will be about 15 below zero, but on Friday morning, the wind chills will likely drop in the 20-25 below zero range.

Even without the wind chill, Friday morning is expected to be around 7 degrees below zero.

Local 4 has issued a 4Warn Weather alert for Friday morning in anticipation of a likely cold weather advisory. It’s possible an advisory could begin Thursday night, too.

Friday will still have sub-zero wind chills for students walking home after school in the afternoon.

School districts that require temperatures to get to 25 below zero and don’t have many students who walk to school might decide not to close on Friday since there have already been so many cold-weather closures.

We haven’t even reached February yet, which means there could be more snow days left to factor in.

But districts that have many students who walk to and from school might decide to cancel again on Friday because of the dangerous cold in the morning and the persistent sub-zero wind chills into the walk home.

We’ll continue to monitor and update the forecast for Friday over the next few days. Temperatures will start to trend upward next week.
