Boater in fatal crash released pending toxicology results

2 killed when speedboat hits cabin cruiser near Harsens Island

CLAY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A boater who was being held on alcohol-related charges in a crash that killed two people in Lake St. Clair near Harsens Island has been released.

According to a statement from the St. Clair County Prosecutor's Office, the 32-year-old Chesterfield Township man was released pending toxicology results.

The crash happened Sunday evening about two miles south of the San Souci Bar.

St. Clair County Sheriff Tim Donnellon said Robert Koontz, of Chesterfield Township, and Nancy Axford, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, died when the cabin cruiser they were in was hit by a 25-foot speedboat.

Four other people on the cabin cruise were hurt. The three people in the speedboat, including the 32-year-old, were not hurt.
