Fraser police: Drunken driver kicked out backseat window of cop car

Clinton Township man arrested Saturday night on Groesbeck Highway

FRASER, Mich. – Police say a Clinton Township man kicked out a backseat window of a Fraser police car after he was arrested Saturday night for allegedly drinking while driving on Groesbeck Highway near 14 Mile Road.

Police say an officer found 25-year-old Donathan Smith behind the wheel of a vehicle stopped on Groesbeck Highway just south of 14 Mile Road. The officer watched him exit the vehicle and throw a bottle of alcohol.

After speaking with Smith, the officer determined he had been drinking. A cup of alcohol also was found in the vehicle, according to police.

Smith was placed in the back seat of the officer's patrol vehicle where, police say, he became very angry and was using profanities. He was banging on the divider and started kicking the rear driver's side window. By the time they got to the police department, police say Smith kicked out the window, which shattered in the parking lot.

Smith is charged with the following: malicious destruction of police property, open container of alcohol in a vehicle and driving while license suspended.

He was arraigned Monday and received a bond of $20,000.
