Winter Weather Advisory in effect

Wintery mix on tap for Saturday

DETROIT – Light snow fell during the overnight hours, putting down a fresh light coating of snow.  The main storm won't arrive until mid-morning, when snow will increase rapidly across the area and become moderate to heavy, with visibilities reduced below ½ or even ¼ mile.

During the afternoon, some warmer air aloft will push northward, and transition some of the snow to ice and eventually rain for areas roughly along and south of 8 Mile.  Those of you who stay all snow will likely see accumulations approaching or even exceeding six inches.

Check: Snow emergencies

For the rest you, the more ice and rain you get, the less accumulating snow you get…but it appears that even you should see 2-4 inches of snow before the changeover.  Highs today should reach the mid-30s.  Any rain or ice should change back over to snow this evening, with the snow winding down overnight.  Lows tonight will drop into the 20s, so areas that get the mix or rain will wake up to a hard crust of snow and ice.

IMPORTANT:  this will be a wet, heavier snow than the previous snowfalls we've had this winter, and this has two implications.  First, those of you in poor physical condition, who have heart problems, or are elderly should use a lot of extra caution if you decide to try and shovel this stuff.  I advise against it…give the kid down the street a few bucks to do it for you.  Speaking of kids, we FINALLY have a snowfall in normal wintertime temperatures…kick them out the door today to play in the snow!

Sunday should start with some cloud cover, but the sun will come out by afternoon.  Monday and Tuesday both look dry, with highs near 20 on Monday and in the mid-20s on Tuesday.  It still appear as if we'll get accumulating snow on Wednesday from the next storm, but the verdict is still out in terms of whether we'll get a few inches, or a lot more.  Stay tuned…
