Several lose homes in Ypsilanti building fire

Residents able to get out, rescued by firefighters

YPSILANTI, Mich. – At least a dozen people are now displaced after an early morning fire Thursday at a building in downtown Ypsilanti.

The fire broke out at 1 a.m. at a building on Pearl Street that houses 16 apartments on the top and a barbershop on the lower level.

"I went and grabbed the fire extinguisher, but by the time I got there ,the ceiling was falling down and there were flames coming out of the door," said Todd, who is one of the residents.

Everyone was able to get out OK or were rescued by firefighters, but one woman was taken to the University of Michigan to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Fire Capt. Dan Cain said investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire, but it did start in one of the apartments.

The Red Cross is at the scene to help the displaced.
