4Warn Weather – People are cleaning up from tornado damage in Southwest Michigan, while straight-line winds left damage in Metro Detroit on Saturday evening. Storms downed trees and damaged structures on the east side of the region, especially near the shores of Harrison and Clay townships.

Wednesday’s calmer weather and ample sunshine were welcomed across the region, but it comes on the 60th anniversary of another sobering weather event.

1964 Chesterfield Township Tornado

On May 8, 1964, a tornado devastated neighborhoods in Chesterfield Township. It touched down near I-94 and 21 Mile Road at about 5 p.m. Before it exited into Lake St. Clair’s Anchor Bay, it killed 13 people and injured hundreds. Their names are etched into a memorial marker in the Chesterfield Historical Village at 47275 Sugarbush Road.

In Southeast Michigan, tornadoes are most common from April to August. June has seen the most tornadoes.

Wednesday night

Wednesday’s pleasant weather included temperatures in the 70- to 80-degree range for much of the area, but cooler weather is on the way.

It will be partly cloudy with increasing clouds at night. Lows will be around 50 degrees. Winds will be out of the west-northwest at 5 to 10 mph.

Thursday

Thursday will bring significantly cooler air with highs around 60 degrees. Rain showers will move into the area during the morning drive from the south, and most of the rain will stay south of M-59 until later in the morning and afternoon. Winds will be out of the east-northeast at 10 to 15 mph with gusts to 25 mph.

Showers will still be in the area Thursday night. Otherwise, it will be mostly cloudy. Winds will be out of the north around 10 mph with gusts up to 20 mph.

Friday

On Friday, we will have a mix of sun and clouds. Highs will be in the lower to mid-60s, and lows will be in the lower to mid-40s.

Mother’s Day Weekend

The weekend will begin with a chance of rain.

Saturday will be mostly cloudy with rain showers. Expect highs around 60 degrees and lows in the lower to mid-40s.

Then, conditions will improve for Mother’s Day. Sunday will be partly cloudy, milder, and pleasant. Highs will be in the mid-60s, with lows in the upper 40s.
