Extraordinary solar storm is painting Metro Detroit skies with green and purple hues

4Warn Weather – Conditions have reached an ‘extreme’ G5 status for the geomagnetic solar storm.

What does that mean for Metro Detroit? It means a breathtaking display of green and purple hues in the northern sky, a rare and awe-inspiring sight.

So, head outside in your pajamas and grab your phone to capture this natural wonder. Remember, the further away from city lights, the more vivid the display.

Friday night’s storm is the strongest to reach the earth since 2003. At NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, Forecasters are tracking CMEs (Coronal Mass Ejections) and solar flares.

Forecasters have alerted engineers and operators of power grids and other infrastructures to mitigate potential effects.

The northern lights are expected to be the brightest between 12 a.m. to 4 a.m. Saturday (May 11).
