L'Anse Creuse North High School – 14-year-old Joseph Longo was voted “Favorite Soccer Freshman” for Local 4′s 4Frenzy Fall Fan Choice Awards. Joseph has been playing soccer since he was three and says he loves the group-action aspect of the game. “What I love most about playing soccer is the teamwork, competing and getting better with my teammates,” he says. “[They are] supportive, hard working, and competitive.”

When asked why he thinks he was nominated and picked for the award, Joseph said, “Many of our upperclassmen were injured for parts of the season; I was supportive always, and I could on and off the bench.”

Joseph plays midfielder, which is when a player is generally positioned on the field between his team’s defenders and forwards. Some midfielders play a disciplined defensive role, breaking up attacks, and are known as defensive midfielders.

The soccer team has dozens of accolades. “My club teammates and I have won four State Cups, been semifinalists in Regional and placed 3rd in the country at the National Championships in Kansas,” he says.

Even though Joseph is only a freshman, he’s already set goals for his future after college. “I would love to continue to play when I am in college,” he says. To end things on a positive note, Joseph shared some advice for students considering playing soccer at his school.

“My parents have always told me to ‘play hard, have fun and always listen to my coaches;' I think this was great advice," he says.
