DETROIT – A 15-year-old boy has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy earlier this month on Detroit’s west side.
The 15-year-old is not being charged as an adult but has been designated for potential adult sentencing if convicted.
Under an adult designation, a judge may sentence a juvenile as a juvenile, as an adult, or impose a blended juvenile sentence that can include an adult sentence if the juvenile violates the terms.
Detroit police responding to a reported shooting found the 14-year-old unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head.
He was taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Prosecutors allege the 15-year-old robbed the victim of his backpack before firing a handgun at him and fleeing the scene.
The teen is also accused of lying to police during the investigation into the boy’s death, according to prosecutors.
The teen turned himself in Sept. 17 at Detroit Public Safety Headquarters.
He is charged with first-degree murder, felony murder, armed robbery, two counts of lying to a peace officer and three counts of felony firearm.
The teen was arraigned Wednesday (Sept. 23) and remanded to the Juvenile Detention Facility following a hearing.
His probable cause conference is scheduled for Sept. 29 at 11:30 a.m. via Zoom.
