Jillian Gerus started skating at just four years old when her grandfather signed her up in the hopes she’d play hockey one day. “But once I saw skaters doing jumps,” explained Jillian, “I was hooked on figure skating.”
Not only does she skate for the Divine Child high school team, she also skates on a theatre-on-ice team out of Hartland called Harmony Theatre Company. What she especially loves about being a part of a team is bonding over a shared interest.
She says that all of the coaches she has are always there for her to encourage and support. “I have improved so much over the years by having such amazing coaches.”
On top of skating and school, Jillian also plays volleyball at Divine Child and is involved with the business club.
New skaters listen up, because Jillian has some great advice for you!:
“Don’t be afraid to fall. In skating you fall a lot learning a new element. Be patient and don’t get frustrated if you fall or if it takes a while to learn the skill. It’s an amazing feeling when you finally land that jump!”
In the future, Jillian would like to go to a college near an ice rink so that she can coach and encourage others learning the sport.
Best of luck, Jillian, we’re sure you’ll keep on shining!
