Boy with stomachache falls asleep in Ann Arbor school office, wakes up to everyone gone

Mother says son locked in office at Abbot Elementary School

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – An Ann Arbor mother says her 10-year-old son was left in the school office after everyone went home for the day.

Shaquana Leverett said it happened Monday (Feb. 12) at Abbot Elementary School in Ann Arbor.

“I was like scared because I didn’t have nobody with me,” said her son Jaquan.

Jaquan said he went to the office with a stomachache during the school day and was told to lie down. When he woke up, he said the office was dark, and everyone was gone.

Leverett began panicking when Jaquan didn’t get off the school bus Monday afternoon.

She sent her fiancé to the school to look for Jaquan. The building had an after-school program so her fiancé could get inside.

Once inside, Leverett said someone told her fiancé they’d seen Jaquan earlier that day in the office.

“So they went to the office and started banging on the door and it was locked and dark and closed,” Leverett said.

Leverett said Jaquan was able to get out of the office by walking through the library, where he was reunited with his family.

“It’s unacceptable, and they should be held accountable for this,” Leverett said.

Ann Arbor Public Schools Communications Director Andrew Cluley issued the following statement regarding the incident.

“The safety of our staff and students is always the top priority in the Ann Arbor Public Schools, and this matter is under full investigation. We do not comment on pending investigations or personnel matters.”
