DETROIT – Detroit Pistons player Paul Reed and Michigan Wolverines basketball star Yaxel Lendeborg are stepping off the court this holiday season to give back to the Detroit community.
Lendeborg joined Local 4 to discuss a special Christmas giveback event in which 14 to 15 Detroit-area kids received $250 each to spend at DTLR.
“It means the world, man,” Lendeborg said about giving back during the holidays. “Especially back when I was a kid, and I always wanted every gift in the world. Now being able to just help even a little bit means the world.”
The event was about more than just gifts; it’s about creating a meaningful experience for the kids.
Lendeborg explained that connecting with the community helps build relationships and understanding.
“It helps build a foundation for everybody else around,” Lendeborg said. “Just being involved and meeting more people, understanding everybody’s circumstances, and knowing you’re not alone.”
Lendeborg also shared how he uses these moments to inspire young people.
“A lot of kids want to be athletes when they grow up,” Lendeborg said. “I feel like it’s a great opportunity for me to give those words of wisdom that I wanted when I was a kid.”
Lendeborg’s already talking with kids about how they can improve and reach their goals.
“What they can do to get better and what they can do to get to where I am now,” Lendeborg said.
The holiday giveback event highlights how athletes can make a positive impact beyond sports by supporting and uplifting their communities.
Catch Lendeborg and the No. 2-ranked Wolverines taking the floor on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2025, when La Salle comes to Ann Arbor inside Crisler Center.
Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
