DETROIT – Corktown, one of Detroit's oldest and most storied neighborhoods, will have its annual Home and Garden Tour on Sunday.
The tour, which takes place from noon to 5 p.m., will feature 9 homes, from 1840s to 1900s houses, and their gardens, and several of the neighborhood's celebrated places and spaces, including Tiger Stadium and Michigan Central Depot.
Blake Almstead is chair of the Corktown Home and Garden Tour, which is run by and benefits the Corktown Historical Society.
"The Corktown Home and Garden tour is curated to celebrate the historic aspects of our neighborhood, while highlighting what's current and coming," said Almstead.
In addition to touring the homes and gardens, the event will include the following, according to event organizers:
Michigan Central Depot - 100 rose bushes have been planted outside the station to honor the 100th anniversary of the building. The station will display large blown up pictures of the old/existing interior as well as pamphlets that have photos and updates on the construction.
Tiger Stadium - There will be a vintage baseball game played at the old Tiger Stadium field at 1 p.m., sponsored by the Detroit Shoppe. The Walker Tavern Wheels from Irish Hills area will be playing the Rochester Grangers From Rochester Hills. There will be favorite Detroit baseball snacks and refreshments available at the game. Also, people will have the opportunity to have their pictures taken from home base. The Navin Field Grounds Crew lead by Tom Derry will be at the field to talk about the history and also their Volunteer group dedicated to restoring and maintaining the historic baseball field that was home to Tiger Stadium for nearly 100 years.
Gaelic League - This Irish American Club of Detroit will be a shopping destination for the day with merchandise from the Detroit Shoppe, as well as Detroit-based merchants including the Peacock Room, Emerald, City bird, Nest and Beaubien fine foods.
Bus Tours - The D:Hive will run narrated tours of the neighborhood, detailing the history, places and spaces in Corktown. There will be several stops around the neighborhood to get on the bus.
Wheelhouse Bicycle Tours - Join a guided by tour with Wheelhouse owner and Corktown resident, Kelli Kavanaugh. Contact the Wheelhouse to make a reservation.
Additionally, organizers said St. Cece's will be serving special home tour brunches and Corktown's other legendary restaurants, such as Mudgie's, Le Petit Zinc, Slow's Bar BQ, will be open.
The cost of the Corktown Home and Garden Tour is $15. Tickets go on sale the day of the tour and can be purchased at the Gaelic League at 2068 Michigan Avenue, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
