Local man builds giant outdoor chess set in Balduck Park

Balduck Park features new attraction

DETROIT – A local man's love for Balduck Park on Detroit's east side inspired him to build an amazing attraction for the community to enjoy.

Tom Campbell created “Friends of Balduck Park” and has cared for the park over the years by picking up trash there to keep the park sparkling.

On Saturday, April 23, Campbell was able to give back to the park that has brought him so much joy.

Campbell hoped to attract park lovers by constructing a giant chess board.

“We’re just trying to accent the park and make it look beautiful,” Campbell said.

The park’s director loved the idea and Campbell enlisted the help of his friends, family and neighbors, along with several businesses volunteering their time and resources, to make the board come to life.

Now that the project is complete and the weather is warming up, Campbell is encouraging locals to spend an afternoon enjoying Balduck Park.
