Community rallies to help Detroit nonprofit replace stolen van

Generous donation restores adventure trips for Detroit kids

DETROIT – This is one of those stories that reminds me how lucky I am to have this job and more importantly to live in this community.

It started with an email tip. I learned the van used by the Mercy Education Project was stolen from their Detroit parking lot.

This is a nonprofit that works with children and women. In the summer they provide free summer programs for children who qualify and they use that van to get these kids out of the city and take them out on cool and unique adventures.

Without the van, those experiences would not be possible.

I knew we had to do something but asking for a new van -- well, it’s a big ask. I put the word out about what happened and within five minutes I heard from Mike Cavanaugh. Mike is with Lithia & Driveway and his local dealerships include The Suburban Collection.

He sent me options of vans that may work. This was happening quickly and I was stunned. I drove to Troy to meet with Mike and check out the van. It was huge and a perfect fit to replace the one that was stolen.

This was a man who just wanted to help. He felt bad for these kids and knew this van would make a big difference.

I’ve never driven a 14-passenger van. They are big-no shock. I drove it like a grandpa down I-75. Ha, I was nervous. I wanted to make sure the van arrived in mint condition.

Thankfully, it did. The reaction from the kids when the new van rolled in was priceless. I was so excited to hand over the keys.

I can’t wait for you to see this story tonight at 6 p.m. It reminded me we’re so lucky to live in this community, a community where people help one another, a community where people really do care about their neighbors.

It’s what Help Me Hank is all about and it’s why having this position at this television station is such a blessing.

I will see you tonight at 6.
