Puppy scams surge as Easter approaches

DETROIT – Puppy scams are booming and this time of year, scammers really make their move. Easter is a popular time for kids to receive puppies as gifts, and sadly, many of these scammers know that is true.

Today, I’m meeting with a local woman who needed a service dog. She paid big money for the dog and then had requests to keep paying the scammer for everything from shipping to paperwork. She is devastated. We are now working to help her get her money. If you’re looking for a dog, first try the Humane Society, visit local breeders, ask for references, and see the dog in person. Be leery if you’re being told to pay in full up front and a major red flag is being told to pay with gift cards.
