Wildfire smoke grounds Thunder Over Michigan air show flights, but crowds still turn out

Organizers said they are hopeful flight demonstrations will resume over the weekend if visibility and weather improve

WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. – Crowds turned out Friday for the Thunder Over Michigan air show at Willow Run Airport despite hazardous air quality caused by smoke from Canadian wildfires.

While attendees continued to enjoy the event on Friday (July 17), aerial performances were canceled for the day after organizers did not receive clearance from the Federal Aviation Administration because of the conditions.

Organizers said they are hopeful flight demonstrations will resume over the weekend if visibility and weather improve.

Even if the FAA approves, individual pilots will make the final decision about whether to fly.

“Every performer has that option to stand down if they don’t feel ready, if they don’t feel 100%,” said Kevin Walsh, CEO of the Michigan Flight Museum. “Again, safety is paramount.”

Although aircraft remained on the ground, visitors still had access to static aircraft displays, food trucks, a children’s activity area, and opportunities to meet pilots and flight crews.

Smoke from Canadian wildfires has created hazardous air quality across southeast Michigan in recent days, leading to cancellations and schedule changes for numerous outdoor events throughout the region.

Organizers said they will continue to monitor conditions and hope to offer full-length performances later this weekend if it is safe to do so.
