DETROIT – Do you know how much you've spent raising your child?

In the least, it's scores more than what your parents spent raising you.

The Department of Agriculture says the cost of raising a child over the last 10 years has soared 25 percent, mostly because of the rising cost of groceries and medical care.

The department tracks annual expenditures by families and said a middle-income family with a child born in 2010 can expect to spend $226,920 for food, shelter and other necessary childhood expenses through age 17. That number doesn't include college or costs related to pregnancy.
