Darnell Blackburn: Why I’m taking swim lessons at age 50

At over 50 years of age, most people are winding down in life. They are looking to ride off into the sunset, retire, and travel the world.

Well, apparently not this guy!

After 27 years in law enforcement, I didn’t retire. Instead, I changed professions altogether, started a whole new career in broadcasting, got remarried, and had two more small children, currently aged five and three, to go along with my other four older kids, the oldest being 30.

So why wouldn’t I continue the wild trend of doing things that most people over fifty wouldn’t do and just take swim lessons?

There is a very real reason why I’m taking swim lessons: as a father, I should have taken them before.

Watching my younger children, who have been taking swim classes, makes me feel both ashamed and inspired. Ashamed because I’ve been held hostage by fear, and inspired because I haven’t allowed my fears to keep them from doing something I didn’t have the courage to do—until now.

For the next few months, I will embark on a journey to learn something new. Something that will free me from my fears, help me be healthier, keep my family safe, and hopefully inspire you too.

Stay tuned as I ride this wave.

(Tune in on Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. to see how the first lesson went and what’s next)
