Dine in the D at Lipuma's Coney Island

People are lining up out the door to get a taste of these hot dogs

DETROIT – July is National Hot Dog Month, so we thought is was only fitting to kick it off with a trip to Lipuma's Coney Island. Whether you like your hot dog smothered in chili, or dragged through the garden, this Rochester favorite has a dog for you.

"Our business is hot dogs, and that is what we sell" says owner Tony Lipuma.

Hot dogs have been the Lipuma family business for over 50 years. It all started with Tony's father who owned 7 different locations. The Rochester location was the last one he opened in 1969. You'll spot it by it by it's beautiful hanging flower baskets, it's close proximity to paint creek, and the incredibly long line that runs out the door.

Tony Lipuma explains that the people line up because the place has it's own personality; even saying that people will stop by Lipuma's before heading to their family home for the holidays. The joint feels very homey with cozy wooden tables and pictures of family on the walls (plus a few celebrities). The love Tony and his staff has for their community of customers is very apparent.

Lipuma's sells all the classic items you would expect to find at a Coney Island and some thing's you wouldn't, like tacos, but their main thing is hot dogs. Their hot dogs come in several varieties including Mexican, New York, Russian, Chicago, and of course the classic Detroit Coney.

If you would like to give Lipuma's a try, they are located at 621 N. Main St.  in Rochester. They are open 10:30am-8pm Monday- Saturday and 11am-7pm on Sunday.
