Race on the road, or fly high with movies this weekend

Movie reviewer Greg Russell shares 4 movies perfect for race weekend on Belle Isle.

Racing is something that has been part of pop culture for decades and with the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear on Belle Isle for the last time, now is a great time to enjoy some high speed movies. Movie reviewer Greg Russell joined “Live In The D” host Jason Carr on Belle Isle this morning to share some films he thinks are perfect for race weekend.

Greg’s list of racing movies have everything from comedy to drama and even animation. You can start out with some laughs with the movies “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” and “The Cannonball Run”. Greg says they are classic racing movies that have all kinds of hilarious scenes mixed in with some great racing. For a more family fun movie, he recommends “Cars”, the classic from Disney/Pixar. The movie has an all-star cast and brings to life the vehicles that you see on the track. Finally, with everyone in a Tom Cruise mood these days, he suggests “Days of Thunder.” The movie from 1990 has all the adrenaline you’d expect from a Cruise movie, but instead of flying high in fighter jets, he’s racing cars around the track.

Speaking of flying high, there is a new movie out this weekend that was partially shot in and over Detroit. It’s called “Wolf Hound” and was inspired by an actual Nazi special ops unit that shot down, repaired, and flew an allied aircraft on an undercover mission against the allies that could have changed the course of the war. Greg enjoyed the movie and gave it four out of five reels saying it was well done and will truly give you the feeling of being in the air in these planes. He also had a chance to talk to one of the stars of the movie. To hear his interview with the actor, watch the video above.
