For 40 years Meteorologist Paul Gross has called Local 4 his home away from home. His career has covered multiple weather events across four decades and taken him all over the world. Before saying a final goodbye, and beginning retirement, he joined Tati Amare and Meredith Bruckner on “Live In The D” to highlight moments he’ll never forget, and share some of his plans for retirement.
“I’m just a kid who grew up to do what he wanted to do since he was seven years old, so I’m the lucky one here,” said Gross. He was alluding to a memory he had of telling his dad that he wanted to grow up to be a weatherman just like Sonny Elliot, and he lived out that dream.
When it comes to retirement, Gross said he will take time for himself and enjoy going up north. He also plans to do consulting as a weather expert in legal cases.
Gross also shared many memories he has from over the years of working at Local 4, but one of the highlights, he said, was getting to meet Katharine Graham herself. “She was of course the matriarch of the Graham company that owns us. She came to Detroit to tour her Detroit station and they asked me to give her a tour of our doppler radar. So, I met Katharine Graham.”
Of course there were other memorable moments from his career he talked about from coverage of the 1999 blizzard, to reporting from Geneva, Switzerland on climate change, to flying with the Blue Angels. But, there is one thing that Gross says he will miss the most from being at Local 4. To hear his thoughts on that, watch the video above.
