OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – Beverly Hannet-Price, a third-generation teacher, had no idea that a school assembly held at Detroit Country Day School was being held in her honor, and many people were in on the surprise.
Former students, including a doctor, an award-winning actor, a CEO, and the owner of the L.A. Clippers, all dropped in to share how Hannett-Price profoundly impacted their lives throughout her decades-long teaching career.
The 90-year-old language teacher holds a Guinness World Record for the longest career as a female English teacher.
For 67 years, Hannett-Price has helped develop generations of young people. Glen Shilling, former headmaster, said. “Her affection for her students has always been to help them fulfill their hopes, ambitions, and dreams.”
Former students, appearing both in person and via video, emphasized that this honor is not just about her longevity. Dr. Steve Kalkanis, a former student, said, “She didn’t just mark time and have the years go by. She made a difference, an unprecedented impact, and continues to do so to this day.”
Actor Courtney B. Vance shared how Hannett-Price’s presence extended beyond the classroom.
“She befriended me, so much so that when my father died by suicide, she came and sat with my mother at our house.
That’s when I realized this is more than just a student-teacher relationship; this is a life relationship,” Vance said.
Her encouragement and dedication to students, faculty, and staff have made her unforgettable over the years — and for years to come.
“I have no plans for retirement. I love this school,” Hannett-Price said.
When asked about the biggest lesson she has instilled in her students, Hannett-Price said, “In life, be the best version of yourself you can possibly be because there will never be a better you.”
