Make this call before your next outdoor project

When digging, one simple call could save you from a world of problems

It’s that time of year for spring projects, either at your home or business. It’s a popular time for digging, building, and planting.

But before you put the shovel to the ground, one Michigan company said you need to call them first.

“Miss Dig 811, we are the state’s utility protection and excavation safety notification center,” said Eric Urbain, director of external affairs with Miss Dig 811.

He said before anyone performs any type of digging, they’re required to contact them.

They are connected to 1,400 utility workers across the state who will then come out to the property and mark where lines are. The companies range from electrical, gas, and cable.

Urbain said these underground lines are everywhere and if someone hits one, it can cause a serious safety hazard, like a gas leak or electrocution.

Utility companies will come out and place flags where lines are, stating which facility is there. Everyone is marked with a different color.

Urbain said this usually occurs within a few days of receiving a call and request to dig. He advises digging away from where the lines are to ensure safety. You can get in touch with Miss Dig by dialing 811, or clicking here.
