What’s really in those nutrition labels?

Expert decodes nutrition labels we see on the back of food boxes

Nutrition labels are meant to help us understand what is in our food, like sugar, fiber, fat, protein grams, and so on. When viewing these labels on the back of our food boxes, all the information can sometimes create more questions than answers.

To help decode the numbers, percentages, and ingredients to optimize our health journey, fitness and nutrition expert Jody Trierweiller stopped by “Live in the D.”

“They’ve changed the food label over the last few years, and I like to break it down and make it really easy to understand,” Trierweiller said. She said when you read the label you know what you’re putting in your body, and if you’re looking to avoid a certain ingredient like saturated fat, you’re going to pay attention to how much is in that product.

She said the #1 thing you want to pay attention to is the serving size, and most are based on 1 cup. Something else she said to be aware of is the amount of calories because that’s based on the cup serving.
