Young Detroit DJ spins the oldies with a side of deep musical knowledge

22-year-old radio host gaining attention from big names

Lindsey Renee has what she calls an “old soul.” While her peers are busy downloading music on their electronic devices, she enjoys listening to records -- but not just any album floats the 22-year-old’s musical boat.

“Sam Cooke, Bobby Womack,” and pretty much any R&B and soul music from the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s eras, Renee said.

This passion began around the age of 15, and she credits her parents for exposing her to what she says is the best music ever.

“It was played every day in my house, and after while, I wanted to hear it for myself,” Renee said.

By the age of 19, she wanted to share her passion with the world, and was given the opportunity to have her own radio show. She named her show the “Soul Patrol,” and not only does she spin the oldies, she gives facts about the album and artist.

Her knowledge of old school music runs so deep, she gained over 500,000 followers on social media after launching her podcast -- and she’s getting attention from some really big names in music.

“My first podcast, I interviewed Dr. Dre,” Renee said. After coming across her profile and discovering her knowledge of old school music, Dr. Dre was so impressed that he had to meet her, he said in an interview with Renee.

She’s hoping to have a national show one day.
