When most homeowners picture a finished basement, they imagine the end result: the game room, the home gym, the wine cellar. What they rarely see is everything that happens in between. Matrix Basement Finishing wants to change that.
The company is currently transforming a 1,400-square-foot basement in South Lyon into a full-featured living space - complete with a bedroom, full bath, large living area, gym, and wine cellar - all expected to be completed in seven to eight weeks. But what sets Matrix apart, company officials say, isn’t just the finished product. It’s how they get there.
Nate Keller, vice president of Matrix Basement Finishing, said the company goes to great lengths to ensure homeowners always know what’s happening in their own home.
“It’s really important when you do a full drywall ceiling that you do mark where the access panels are going to be,” Keller said. “There’s a lot of things that go to the first floor of the home or even to outside that the homeowner needs access to.”
Keller said Matrix marks those access points before crews begin drywalling, then walks homeowners through each panel’s location and purpose at the end of the job.
“We’ll be in here probably by, you know, end of summer, early fall,” Keller said. “Watching football down here, enjoying the holidays down here, working out in the wintertime when it’s cold outside.”
On the job site, that communication falls heavily on Senior Field Manager Contonio Rico Hill, who visits every Matrix project at least once a week to monitor progress - from electrical work to drywall - and to keep homeowners in the loop at every stage.
“My job is to make the homeowners understand what’s going on, let them know the process that we go through on a day-to-day basis for the completion of the project,” Hill said.
At the South Lyon home, the project is currently in the rough framing and electrical phase. Hill walked through the space methodically, pointing out where sub-panels, lighting, and switches have been positioned with the homeowner’s preferences in mind.
“So currently we are at the rough framing and electrical phase,” Hill said. “The sub-panel, the lights, the switches, everything is in a location that suits the homeowner’s needs and kind of makes sense.”
Among the details Hill highlighted were the energy-efficient flat panel lights that will illuminate the ceiling once drywall is installed - already staged on-site and ready to go in.
