19-year-old Pontiac man charged in fatal shooting

PONTIAC, Mich. – A 19-year-old man has been charged in a fatal shooting that took place Monday in Pontiac.

William Jawuan Nelson, of Pontiac, was charged with open murder, two counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony and assault with intent to murder. If convicted, two of the charges carry life sentences.

Deputies first were called about 4:09 a.m. to a home on Mark Street where the caller said an unknown man knocking at the door said he had been shot. He was found with a gunshot wound to his chest. He indicated he was the victim of an attempted robbery at a home in the 50 block of Thorpe Street.

Deputies went to the Thorpe Street home and found Marcus “Merk” Allen Burkett, 23, shot to death. An autopsy showed that he died of two gunshot wounds.

According to police, Burkett had a handgun and returned fire at Nelson, hitting him once.

Deputies learned two other people had also been shot at the home. The other two already had been transported to McLaren Oakland Hospital. The Mark Street victim also was sent to the hospital.

Authorities said the other victims, a 17-year-old boy, a 17-year-old girl and a 19-year-old man, are expected to make full recoveries.
